A large volcano situated on the island of Sakurajima in Kagoshima Bay, southern Kyushu, has been averaging about four eruptions of ash a day, since the start of 2011, until now (late September). There are no signs that it will quieten down soon. It covers the city and surrounds in a layer of black dust every day, which turns to mud when it rains. It is a full time job for the city's residents to keep the ash under control.
