This wonderful old engine pulls three beautifully restored passenger cars along the JR Hisatsu line, which was first opened in 1909. The train runs between Kumamoto station and Hitoyoshi station, and is a great hit with children, adults and of course, foreign tourists like me! It runs along the very scenic Kuma river, and through the mountains, taking in wonderful rural scenery, and stopping at several old, well preserved stations along the route.
