These decorative floats are set up on street corners all over Fukuoka, in readiness for the festival. They are ten meters tall, and weigh over a ton. They used to be carried through the streets on the shoulders of men, but because the streets are now lined with electricity wires, it is too dangerous, so they now carry shorter versions in the procession.
